A daring cyberattack has left decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol Echo Protocol reeling, with nearly $77 million worth of synthetic Bitcoin (eBTC) minted through a critical admin key compromise. The incident, which unfolded on the Monad blockchain, has raised alarm bells within the cryptocurrency community following a significant uptick in DeFi-related breaches this year.
On May 19, 2026, blockchain security experts at PeckShield reported that a hacker exploited vulnerabilities within Echo Protocol, managing to mint approximately 1,000 unauthorized eBTC, valued at around $76.7 million. The attacker has since laundered nearly 5% of the loot via the Tornado Cash mixing service, while still retaining a staggering 955 eBTC, estimated to be worth roughly $73 million.
“We are currently investigating a security incident impacting the Echo bridge on Monad,” the protocol stated in a press release. “All cross-chain transactions remain suspended while the investigation is underway.” This exploit is the latest in a concerning trend, with at least 12 DeFi protocols compromised in just one month, including notable breaches affecting THORChain and Verus Protocol's Ethereum bridge.
According to insiders, the breach was attributed to a compromise of the admin private key rather than a flaw in smart contract code. Blockchain developer “Marioo” underscored that operational lapses, not technical errors, were at the heart of the exploit. Key deficiencies identified included a lack of multi-signature protection for the admin role, no timelock features, and a failure to implement basic safeguards such as a minting supply cap.
In a follow-up investigation, Curvance, a DeFi lending and liquidity management protocol, confirmed it had detected anomalies correlated to the Echo eBTC market but emphasized that its own smart contracts were not compromised. As a precautionary measure, Curvance has paused trading on the affected market.
Monad's co-founder, Keone Hon, reassured users via social media that the Monad network remains unaffected and functions normally amidst the investigation. “While this incident pertains to Echo Protocol, we are committed to ensuring the safety and integrity of our blockchain,” Hon stated.
This incident represents a distressing amplification of security challenges faced by the DeFi landscape in 2026, which has witnessed unprecedented attacks resulting in losses exceeding hundreds of millions of dollars. Earlier this year, the Drift Protocol fell victim to a breach that siphoned off $285 million, while Kelp DAO suffered a staggering $292 million loss.
As Echo Protocol continues to investigate this significant breach, it has promised to keep stakeholders updated through official channels. The increasing sophistication of these attacks underscores the urgent need for enhanced security measures across the DeFi sector.
